Balayage is one of the most requested colour services at Cruz Hairworks – and for good reason. This soft, natural technique creates a beautiful result without the harsh regrowth lines of traditional highlights.

If you’re new to balayage, here’s a simple guide to what it is, how it works, and why so many of our Whitley Bay clients love it.

What Is Balayage?

Balayage is a freehand colour technique where lighter pieces are painted onto the hair in a soft, sweeping motion. The goal is a natural, sun-kissed effect that grows out gently and doesn’t leave a harsh root line.

The word balayage comes from the French for “to sweep” – which perfectly describes the way the colour is applied. Unlike foils, which give a more structured look, balayage blends colour seamlessly into your natural shade.

Why Balayage Is So Popular

Many of our clients at Cruz love balayage for its low-maintenance finish. Here’s why it’s become a go-to choice:

  • Soft regrowth – No obvious line when your hair grows out
  • Customisable colour – We can tailor the depth, tone, and placement to suit you
  • Suitable for all hair lengths – Works beautifully on short and long styles
  • Perfect for blending greys or adding dimension – Especially helpful for maturing hair

It’s also a great option if you’re colouring your hair for the first time – subtle enough to enhance your look without being a dramatic change.

What to Expect at Your Appointment

We always start with a full consultation. We’ll talk about:

  • Your current colour and condition
  • The tones and effect you’re hoping to achieve
  • Whether you’d like to keep things soft and natural or a little more defined

Once we’ve created a plan, your stylist will apply the colour freehand, allowing for a personalised result. Depending on your hair and the look you want, we may also tone the colour afterwards for a polished finish.

Appointments usually take around 2 to 3 hours, depending on the technique and hair length.

How to Look After Your Balayage

To keep your balayage looking its best between visits:

  • Use a sulphate-free shampoo to protect the tone and softness
  • Add moisture with a weekly conditioning treatment (we recommend Joico or L’Oréal Professional)
  • Come in every 8–12 weeks for a toner or gloss refresh

We’ll talk you through a home care plan during your appointment, tailored to your hair’s needs.

Balayage is ideal for anyone wanting a natural, elegant finish with less upkeep. If you’d like to try it for the first time, our team would love to guide you through the process.
