A fresh tint should leave you with rich, even colour and the lit-from-within shine that makes the appointment feel worth it. The hard part is keeping it that way at home. A lot of fade happens in the first two weeks, long before your next visit. Here is how to look after your tinted hair so it stays vibrant from one appointment to the next at Cruz Hairworks in Whitley Bay.

## Why tinted hair fades

Permanent tint sits inside the hair shaft, and anything that lifts the cuticle lets some of that colour wash out. The usual culprits are hot water, harsh sulphate shampoos, chlorine, direct sun, and heat styling without protection. Hard water in our area can also leave a mineral film on the hair that dulls tone over time. None of these are dealbreakers. They just mean a few small habits make a big difference.

## Looking after your tint at home

A few easy swaps will keep your colour looking salon-fresh for longer.

**Use a colour-safe shampoo and conditioner.** L'Oréal Professionnel Vitamino Color is what I recommend to clients at Cruz. It is gentle, protective, and built specifically for coloured hair.

**Wash less often.** Two or three times a week is plenty for coloured hair. A good dry shampoo handles in-between days without stripping tone.

**Rinse with cooler water.** Hot water lifts the cuticle and pulls colour out with it. Lukewarm to cool helps seal everything in.

**Always use heat protection.** Straighteners, curling tongs and hot brushes fade tint quickly without a heat protectant spray as a barrier.

**Protect against UV.** Sunlight bleaches tint, especially on lighter shades. A hat, a UV protection spray, or both, will help in summer.

**Keep moisture levels up.** Coloured hair tends to feel drier. L'Oréal Vitamino 10-in-1 spray is a quick all-rounder for hydration, shine and heat protection.

## Salon support between tint appointments

Home care does the daily work, but a couple of in-salon top-ups go a long way.

A gloss toner between full colour appointments refreshes shine and corrects any tone shift, so your tint looks newer than it should at week six.

The L'Oréal Metal Detox treatment is the other one I would push hard. It removes metal particles from hard water and previous colour processes, which is one of the biggest causes of dullness and uneven results. Done in salon before your next tint, it gives the colour something cleaner to work with.

Both treatments are available at our [hair colouring service in Whitley Bay](https://www.cruzhairworks.com/service-categories/hair-colouring), and we can add either to an existing appointment.

## How often should you book a tint

A good rule of thumb is every four to six weeks. That keeps regrowth from showing strongly and means your colour service stays a normal length rather than turning into a longer correction. If you stretch it beyond eight weeks, the gap between your natural colour and the tinted ends becomes harder to blend, and may need a slightly different approach next time.

## Frequently asked questions

### How long does a tint usually last?

A permanent tint will not wash out completely, but the vibrancy and shine fade over four to six weeks as regrowth comes through and pigment lifts from the lengths. Using colour-safe products and a gloss toner can stretch the look closer to six weeks.

### Can I use any shampoo on tinted hair?

You can, but many supermarket shampoos contain sulphates that strip colour quickly. A salon-quality colour-safe shampoo is the single biggest change you can make to keep your tint looking fresh.

### Does washing my hair the day after a tint affect it?

Yes. The colour needs around 48 to 72 hours to settle inside the hair shaft. Waiting at least two days before the first wash gives the tint the best chance to lock in.

### Will swimming fade my tint?

Chlorine and salt water both speed up fade. Rinse your hair with fresh water before swimming so it absorbs less of either, and use a deep conditioning treatment afterwards.

### Is hard water bad for tinted hair?

It can be. Mineral deposits from hard water sit on the hair and dull tone over time. The L'Oréal Metal Detox range, used as part of your home routine or as an in-salon treatment, clears it.
